Madison Morning Milers
WHAT IS MADISON MORNING MILERS?
Madison Morning Milers is a Madison Elementary School program that allows children to run or walk laps before morning exercises. Extensive research shows that the more physically active schoolchildren are, the better they do academically. There is also a growing body of literature suggesting that physical activity has beneficial effects, and there is a strong belief that regular participation in physical activity is linked to enhancement of brain function and cognition, thereby positively influencing academic performance. The news has reported on a special program being implemented at a high school, where students could take part in a dynamic gym class at the beginning of the day and had access to exercise bikes and balls throughout the day in their classrooms. The results were astounding. Those who participated nearly doubled their reading score and math scores increased 20-fold! Research has shown that after 30 minutes on the treadmill, students solve problems up to 10 percent more effectively.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The program runs from 8:00 to 8:15 every day. Parent volunteers are located near the handball courts with student ID cards to track laps.
Madison Morning Milers and Walking School Bus have teamed up to encourage our students to move!!! Each time a child walks to school, they get 2 extra laps for walking to school! Milers are also recognized at Town Hall meetings in front of all their peers.
Laps are tracked daily with Stridetrack Running Club Management Software and students earn “feet” for a certain number of laps they run:
- 7 laps = 1 mile
- Grades 1st-5th, run 5 miles (35 laps) = 1 foot
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
