Madison Morning Milers

What is Madison Morning Milers?

Madison Morning Milers is a Madison Elementary School program that allows children to run or walk laps before morning exercises.

Extensive research shows that the more physically active school children are, the better they do academically. There is also a growing body of literature suggesting that physical activity has beneficial effects, and there is a strong belief that regular participation in physical activity is linked to enhancement of brain function and cognition, thereby positively influencing academic performance.

Two years ago, the news reported on a special program being implemented at a high school, where students could take part in a dynamic gym class at the beginning of the day, and had access to exercise bikes and balls throughout the day in their classrooms. The results were astounding. Those who participated nearly doubled their reading score and math scores increased 20-fold!  Research has shown that after 30 minutes on the treadmill, students solve problems up to 10 percent more effectively.

How does it work?

The program generally begins between 8:00 and 8:05 every day. Cards/markers are by volunteers located near the handball courts. We have cards available outside the CDC for our milers to fill out.  Our top runners are coming prepared, with cards filled out (name and room number).  We have about 50 "milers" each day (averaging 8 miles per day collectively) so we can no longer recycle cards.  Cards must be turned in to Marie Puterbaugh to be counted.

Children are given an index card to fill out each week, we ask the child put their name (first, last) room number, and teacher on the front.  For each lap that a child runs or walks, they get a mark on the back of the card.

Morning Milers and Walking School Bus have teamed to encourage our students to move!!! Each time a child walks to school, they can fill out or bring a card and they get 2 marks for walking to school!!

Laps are tracked daily and counted at least weekly.

Depending on grade, students earn “feet” for a certain number of laps they run.

  • 7 laps = 1 mile
  • Grades K-2 Run 5 miles (35 laps) = 1 foot
  • Grades 3-5 Run 10 miles (70 laps) = 1 foot

Milers are also recognized at Town Hall meetings – last year some of the top milers got their picture in The Beach Reporter!

How can you help?

Send Your Child Prepared – THIS IS THE BEST THING PARENTS CAN DO TO HELP, as this program is run by volunteers who have limited capacity to hand out cards, mark, answer questions etc.  If your child comes with a pre-filled out index card each day with their name, room number and teacher’s name on the front of the card, it would go a long way in making milers run smoothly!  Cards are about $1-$2 for 100, we really appreciate parents who are sending students in prepared and donating cards!

Markers are welcome!  Simply grab or bring a marker and neatly mark each time a runner runs a lap.  No need to sign up, just join when you can!
